this is a small mandolin designed for traveling. it is based around a piece of hollowood: a plywood cylinder twisted in a spiral tube like a cardboard tube. sadly, hollowood is difficult to find, and i fear that the company has gone out of business. this piece was finished with padauk veneer -- a rich red hardwood -- and the fretboard and trim are padauk and ebony. the soundboard is pine.

the mando is deliberately quiet, for use in hotel rooms, thought when aplified via a piezoelectric pickup, it sounds much like a traditional celtic-style mandolin.

the whole thing fits into a cardboard poster tube with plastic caps, and is short enough to fit in airplane carry-on luggage.
